It’s the battle between industry veterans and (relative) newcomers as the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards finally announced its winners.
The Goldfinger <金手指> led the night’s most-awarded film, winning six statuettes for mostly technical achievements including Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography and Best Sound Design. The movie also scored Tony Leung Chiu-Wai his record-breaking sixth win in the Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor.
In Broad Daylight <白日之下>, which received 16 nominations nearly swept the acting awards with Jennifer Yu, David Chiang and Rachel Leung bringing home Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively. Mad Fate <命案> won three awards, notably Soi Cheang’s first win in the Best Director category while the otherwise poignant Time Still Turns the Pages <年少日記> could only muster the Best New Director award for Nick Cheuk.
Finally, in a repeat of last year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, A Guilty Conscience <毒舌大狀> follows the footsteps of To: My Nineteen-Year-Old Self <給十九歲的我> for winning the night’s sole top award in the Best Film category.
