30 Years Later: Drunken Master II 醉拳II (1994)

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend, Drunken Master II <醉拳II> made history for a Jackie Chan film to hit the HK$40 million benchmark — HK$40.9 million, to be exact — at the time of its release in 1994.  It was also the second highest-grossing Hong Kong movie that year behind the Chow Yun Fat-led God of Gamblers Return <賭神2>.

Hidden Strike 狂怒沙暴 (2023) Review

The long-delayed Hidden Strike <狂怒沙暴> falls into the category of “woulda, coulda, shoulda” of a potentially good action comedy. It has Jackie Chan and John Cena (even though, the latter was supposedly intended for Sylvester Stallone but dropped out instead). The movie is directed by Scott Waugh of Act of Valor and Need for Speed fame. And it also boasts a big-budget price tag, reportedly costing approximately RMB570 million (US$80 million) to make.

35 Years Later: The Inspector Wears Skirts 霸王花 (1988)

Hong Kong’s answer to 1984’s Police Academy but with the exception of an all-female police squad, and what fascinates me the most is Jackie Chan’s involvement as the producer for The Inspector Wears Skirts <霸王花>.

35 Years Later: Project A II A計劃續集 (1987)

In 1987, Jackie Chan ruled the Top 10 Hong Kong box office with two movies including Armour of God <龍兄虎弟> and Project A II <A計劃續集>. The former, of course, became the highest-grossing Hong Kong movie at the time with a then-astounding HK$35.4 million.

25 Years Later: Mr. Nice Guy 一個好人 (1997)

Twenty-five years ago today, the Jackie Chan-starred Mr. Nice Guy <一個好人> ruled the Hong Kong box office as the highest-grossing local movie of 1997 at HK$45.4 million, upstaging the likes of Jet Li in Once Upon A Time In China & America <黃飛鴻之西域雄獅> (HK$30.2 million) and Stephen Chow in Lawyer, Lawyer <算死草> (HK$27.1 million).
