Initially scheduled for 2021, the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards was forced to postpone its ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s edition of the Hong Kong Film Awards not only marked the first time it combined nominations for movies that were released in 2020 and 2021 but also happened to celebrate its 40th anniversary since it was first established in 1982. That year — 1st Hong Kong Film Awards — saw Allen Fong’s neo-realist family drama, Father And Son <父子情> took home the Best Film and Best Director awards while Michael Hui and Kara Hui won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively for Security Unlimited <摩登保鑣> and My Young Auntie <長輩>.
Back to the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, Soi Cheang’s gritty black-and-white crime thriller Limbo <智齒> lead the pack with 14 nominations while Longman Leung’s Anita Mui biopic Anita <梅艷芳> scored 12 nods. Jun Li’s Drifting <濁水漂流> gets 11 nods, followed by Zero To Hero <媽媽的神奇小子> with 9 nods and the late Benny Chan’s final action movie, Raging Fire <怒火> with 8 nods.
